Have you ever wanted to dye your hair a wacky color but you’re just not sure what brand actually works? I went ahead and bought two different brands of semi-permanent hair dye both in purple to test this out. One brand had raving reviews on Amazon while the other one was a recommendation from a professional hairstylist. This is also a part 2 of sorts to my previous post Blonde to Purple – Pt. 1 which entailed me trying to dye my hair purple for the very first time.
After the results of the dye job I decided it would be a good idea to try a different brand to test the results to see if it truly was the best dye for the job. Just as a heads up I am not a professional when it comes to hair dye but I have been dyeing my own hair for well over ten years now. I have made mistakes and I’ve made masterpieces. So let’s go over which dye is best to buy to have beautiful, colorful hair!
If you’re going for a color such as green or fire engine red you may get different results because they’re different hues. However, I strongly feel that the results I got will probably be the same with those colors as well as far as which brand was dull and which was vibrant. Also want to add that I started with naturally dirty blonde hair with no previous colors in my hair.
I started out with Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids in the color Violet ($10.50), a brand that I read multiple reviews for on Amazon which had pretty positive results. Pictures showed women with all different shades of purple depending on their natural hair color and whether they used a lightener before application. Each image was eye catching and beautiful which was why this was my first choice. Applying the color was easy since you don’t have to mix it with a solution you just slap it on your hair, wait 20 minutes and wash it off! Simple, right? Ehhh… sort of.
Difficult doesn’t begin to scribe how hard it was getting the smudges off of my skin. Stains were under my nails for a solid 3 days. When it came to washing it off I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that it stained my entire shower purple. It looked like someone took a purple dinosaur into the shower and stabbed it until it bled out.
Stepping out of the shower I looked in the mirror and my hair looked black when it was wet. After I used a blowdryer the color was darker than I expected. My hair looked more like a dark greyish color with a tint of purple to it. The color appeared to be very flat, not at all what you would expect when going for a crazy color. Definitely not what I was expecting but I could work with it. Unfortunately it seemed to fade faster than the stains on my nails did so it didn’t last long. I think that if I would have washed my hair with cooler water the color would have lasted longer than it did so this was a mistake that I made on my part.
After posting pictures of my hair on Facebook a friend of mine who is a professional hairstylist commented that I should try Joico’s purple dye. The Joica product was more expensive ($14.99) but I trusted the professional advice. Again, Amazon had some great reviews with gorgeous pictures of bright purples in all different shades. I was ready to try Joico and hoped my hair didn’t fall out from these kooky colors!
Joico took a little longer to be delivered and I was dying to dye! Once again I went to work coloring my hair and waited 20 minutes before I could wash it out. The tube of Joico was a little bigger than Pravana which I approve of since it cost more. While I waited the full 20 minutes I could already notice that it was going to be brighter.
So what happened when I washed my hair?
I didn’t murder another purple dinosaur in the shower that’s for sure! Some of the dye stuck to the bottom of the tub but it was a very faint pinkish tint that wouldn’t be that noticeable. At least I wouldn’t have to bleach the tub every single time I use Joico (I HATE bleach!) Stepping out of the shower instantly I could see the results! Looking in the mirror my hair was purple when wet unlike with Pravana. I dried my hair and couldn’t believe how beautiful the color was! It was vibrant and a beautiful hue of purple. I’m not going to make the mistake of washing my hair with warm water again. This product did not stain my skin and fingernails after I showered.
So the winning product is fairly obvious here: Joico won by a landslide! The Joico dye doesn’t stain everything in my life, it’s brighter, and it was also recommended by a professional. If standing out more is the goal maybe try a lightener or go and get it professionally done. The choice is all yours! I choose to dye my hair myself because it is more cost efficient than spending an incredulous amount of money at a salon.
Know of another brand that you can dye your hair magical colors that works even better than Joico? Leave a comment below because I would love to hear of more brands to try!
